Appointment of Australia’s First Anti-Slavery Commissioner. By Louise Rumble, Partner, Gadens Sydney
The Federal Government has appointed Mr. Chris Evans as Australia’s first Anti-Slavery Commissioner, commencing a five-year term on 2 December 2024. Formerly Chief Executive Officer of the Global Freedom Network, and previously a Senator and Minister, Mr. Evans will drive efforts to combat modern slavery, support victims, and guide business compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth). Employers should expect guidance on identifying and addressing slavery risks, improving transparency, and maintaining compliance. While the Commissioner currently lacks enforcement powers, businesses are urged to stay proactive, as future reforms may introduce stricter obligations.
